A Feast for the Senses

Indulge your sense of SMELL

County fragrances change with the seasons. The Spring sweet smell of maple syrup drifts from a sugar shack. Lilacs and apple blossoms scent the air. Fresh ploughed fields and big bales of hay lend a sweetgrass Summer perfume. The bouquet of a crisp County wine floats up from a glass sparkling in the sun. Nippy old cheese, ripe sweet apples and spicy pumpkin pie in the Fall and the umistakable tang of fir trees makes you feel like a kid again.

Indulge your sense of SIGHT

Come, look and be surprised. Beaches that look like the Caribbean and friendly Main Streets that take you back. Award winning modern wineries and a gold-medal cidery in an old stone barn. Abstract art, traditional quilts, glass and pottery, silks and photography in dozens of studios and galleries. Our whole south shore is an Important Bird Area with hawks and herons and songbirds - more than 350 species have been recorded here.

Indulge your sense of TASTE

Once known as Canada’s Garden County we’re now its newest wine region. And we’re still rich in farm fresh fruits and vegetables from sweetest corn to crispest apples, heritage tomatoes and succulent lamb and beef. Many world class chefs have moved here and delight in using this bounty in their gourmet dishes. We celebrate our regional cuisine and wines with festivals and fairs and great places to dine, sample, sip and buy - from roadside stands to fine restaurants.

Indulge your sense of HEARING

There’s bustle and chatter on Main Street, but down a quiet country road it’s just birdsong and wind in the trees. With 800 kms of shoreline you can hear every mood of the lake from thunderous roars to lapping whispers. The bullfrog song can lull you to sleep - or stay up late to catch cool jazz, acoustic guitars or good old country music in a pub. Students at our famous music camp play Mozart in the shade of a massive oak tree. And spoken word stories of County heroes and rogues are the stuff of legends (and lies!)

Indulge your sense of TOUCH

Warm sand between your toes, cool water to soothe and refresh. Walk through dewy grass in the early morning or climb a rocky ridge at sunset.  Enjoy luxurious spa treatments from aromatherapy to deep massage. Wrestle a big slippery bass on a fishing trip or pet a soft baby lamb on the farm. At B&Bs and country inns, snuggle by the fire on a cold winter night or tumble into a cool fresh bed at the end of a busy day antiquing, cycling or just exploring this beautiful island county.
