... a world-class birding location
More than 300 species of birds have been recorded
at Prince Edward Point,
a major staging area for migratory birds.
Welcome to the Prince
Edward County Birding Festival (May) as we ring in the spring with
a dawn chorus of warblers, vireos, flycatchers and thrushes. Prince Edward
County's location in eastern Ontario has resulted in 337 species of birds
being recorded.
Prince Edward County is a world class birding location,
boasting the highest concentration and abundance of migratory birds
anywhere on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. The Canadian Nature
Federation and Bird Studies Canada have recently designated Prince Edward
Point as a Globally Important Birding Area (IBA) in 1998.
Because of its location in eastern Lake Ontario, Prince
Edward County is a natural catch-all for migrating birds during both spring
and fall. The points of land along the southern shore especially, provide
excellent birding opportunities during the spring migration. Point Petre,
Salmon Point, West Point (Sandbanks Provincial Park), and Huyck's Point
have all been identified as important focal points to view migrating birds.
Of all the points of land sprinkled along the south
shore of the county, Prince Edward Point, located at the extreme southeastern
end of the Long Point Peninsula in South Marysburgh Township, has been
identified as the most important. Because of its importance, Prince Edward
Point was set aside as a National Wildlife Area by the Canadian Wildlife
Service in 1978.
The wide diversity of
habitat in Prince Edward County also accounts for the large number of
species that visit here. To date, 337 species of birds are on record
as having appeared in Prince Edward County. Limestone ledges, sandy and
rocky shorelines, open fields, deciduous and coniferous woods, small and
large lakes and ponds, alvars, and wetlands all provide an inviting environment.
If you have been birding
in Prince Edward County we would appreciate a tally of your sightings.
Only through your efforts can we learn even more about Prince Edward County
as the spot to be for birders in eastern Ontario.
