The Art of Folk Art

Terry Williams, Folk Artist, sometimes sees life from a different perspective – and uses this to create his obtuse folk art pieces. Ranging from political statements to tongue-in-cheek interpretations of everyday idioms, his scenarios are figments of a creative imagination (and an off-beat sense of humour). Partial to puns and satire, he takes inspirations from his surroundings whether it’s nature (PorcuVine) or the current social environment (Canadian Politics).

Terry’s work is currently on display at Arts on Main Gallery, Bean Counter Café and Ridge Road Sculpture Gallery, all in Picton; also The Grange Winery in Hillier. Featured at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery in Minden, during the prestigious Susan Murray Folk Art Show (organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery) - with a piece purchased by Susan Murray. Now collected internationally, his pieces are in several private collections as far away as Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, France, UK and USA - as well as throughout Canada. Terry participates in The PEC Studio and Gallery Tour (5 years), The Maker’s Hand Show (4 years), and Art in the County (2006, 2009),and Blizzmax Gallery ‘Art of the Vine’ Show (3 years).

TERRY WILLIAMS - the artist

Born in the UK, Terry moved to Canada in 1964 – and, in the momentous year of 2000, he and his wife made the informed decision to buy a house in the County, after a long relationship with the Kingston/Quinte area.

With no formal training Terry started carving in 1990, concentrating on very detailed birds and decoys.  After several trips to the Maritimes, he became enamored with the wonderful naïve colourful folk art he saw there.

He continues to change and adapt; always experimenting, always learning – taking inspiration from a wide variety of sources.  His working career is as varied as the colours of his art – from serving as a professional soldier in Malaya and Hong Kong, to marketing radio stations across Canada, and now a flourishing Folk Artist in Prince Edward County.
